A Memorable Christmas: Visit Famed London Art Exhibitions

London, England, December 22, 2011

Ensure your Christmas is an especially memorable one, and delve into the most eminent exhibitions on display in the cultural capital that is London. As well as exhibitions, there are also a whole host of attractions to explore when you visit the city, from intriguing markets to world famed landmarks, from thrilling interactive experiences to unique events.

There are two art exhibitions that you really should make sure you visit, however: the Pipilotti Rist and the celebrated da Vinci exhibitions.

Make sure you are quick, as the Pipilotti Rist exhibition is only running until 8 January 2012. Prepare for video projections that cascade across diverse surfaces; super-saturated colours that intermix and overrun; and gossamer images that emanate from dark corners. Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist's 30-year retrospective is one of the most overwhelming exhibitions you are likely to experience.

Certainly, one of the most entrancing exhibitions of this autumn is incontestably the da Vinci exhibition at the National Gallery. This has so far proven extremely popular.? Running until 5th?February 2012, advance tickets have in fact already sold out.? Every day, however, a limited number of tickets will be available on the door.? It is worth acting quickly in order to make the most of this mesmerising, distinctive exhibition.

Leonardo da Vinci was, incontrovertibly, a prodigious talent: and, furthermore, the range of his extraordinary skills is almost inconceivable to many.? He made astonishing inputs not merely into painting, but a range of fields ? he was an gifted sculptor, architect, engineer, mathematician, inventor ? and more.

However, he is of course most highly respected and recognised in the current age as a painter, and the National Gallery?s exhibition focuses on this particular facet of his many talents.

Da Vinci was a remarkable polymath. This is really the blockbuster exhibition of the year.? You will well and truly regret not acquiring tickets.? If you do get tickets, you will revel in the experience of a lifetime.

Additionally to this, make your Christmas in London especially memorable when you take Christmas tours. Sightseeing tours make for a truly exceptional experience. You will not just swoop past the most outstanding attractions in the capital arbitrarily. Instead, your guide will bring London enchantingly to life for you in an imaginative and engaging fashion. Become captivated by the often unusual narratives that lie behind the major landmarks of the city.

Visit London this Christmas and immerse yourself in its array of cultural sights and landmarks. Even take a day trip to an enchanting region of the UK ? for example, indulge in a Leeds Castle tour. A visit to the UK truly makes for a Yuletide experience to cherish.

The government disaster agency NDRRMC said more than a thousand others remain missing. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? The death toll from flash floods that swept away entire villages in the southern Philippines climbed to nearly 1,500 on Tuesday, as authorities widened their search for bodies.

The Office of Civil Defense's latest tally listed 891 dead in Cagayan de Oro and an additional 451 in nearby Iligan city. The rest came from several other provinces. Most of the dead are unidentified.

"The search will continue as long as we are recovering bodies," said Civil Defense head Benito Ramos.

He said that decomposing remains were retrieved floating in the sea as far as 60 miles (100 kilometers) from the two cities where a Dec. 16 tropical storm unleashed more than a month's worth of rainfall in 12 hours, sending walls of water gushing into homes.

One of the dead was a headless girl who appeared to have been hit by logs that were carried by flash floods, Ramos said. She was among 13 bodies retrieved by a team of navy sailors.

Navy and coast guard divers were initially sent to find more bodies believed to be pinned down by logs scattered in the sea and along riverbanks, but Ramos said the operation had to be called off because waters were too murky. "It's useless to dive when you can see nothing," he said.

It was not clear how many more are missing.

More than 60,000 homeless from hundreds of flood-ravaged villages spent a miserable Christmas in jam-packed schools and gymnasiums, while the United Nations launched an urgent appeal for $28 million to help the displaced ? more than half the population of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, which are in the southern Philippines' Mindanao region.

More rains Tuesday prompted evacuations of nearly 2,000 people on the opposite side of Mindanao Island, where a child was reported missing in floods in Surigao city, the civil defense reported.

President Benigno Aquino III, who banned logging in February following previous flooding deaths that experts say were caused partly by deforestation and soil erosion, has ordered an investigation.

Communist guerrillas in the south, meanwhile, threatened to punish multinational companies they blame for environmental destruction.

Rebel spokesman Jorge Madlos told The Associated Press by telephone that they sought funds for victims from huge pineapple and banana plantations and other companies.

"Some were lukewarm to our call," Madlos said. "That'll be a factor when we decide which ones to punish first for this destruction."

Another factor in the staggering death toll was illegal settlements along Cagayan rivers. Thousands of people lived in shanties on the banks and islands directly along the water's path.

NFL: Tim Tebow meets prep quarterback amputee

Orchard Park, N.Y. ? Tim Tebow, meet Jacob Rainey.

The Denver quarterback whose on-field comebacks have intrigued the nation, met Rainey, whose had part of his right leg amputated after an injury in September, before the Broncos faced the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

"I?m excited, I guess, to meet someone that famous," said Rainey, the highly rated Virginia prep quarterback who was hurt in a scrimmage. It?s nice that he can take time out of his day to help other people out. I appreciate it."

Rainey was flown with his family to Buffalo to watch the Christmas Eve game by Tebow?s Wish 15 foundation, which has brought a young fan to every Broncos game this year. Rainey?s story has been inspirational and heartbreaking.

Regarded as a can?t-miss major college prospect out of Woodberry Forrest School, Rainey suffered a severe knee injury that also severed an artery in his right leg. He underwent several operations until it was finally determined doctors had no choice but to amputate part of the leg.

It?s his outlook and courage facing a life-changing incident that has so inspired family, friends and teammates.

The fact that he?s taken his injury in stride, not laying blame at anyone or adapting a "why me?" attitude has drawn the attention of the likes of Alabama coach Nick Saban, who sent him a red Crimson Tide jersey with the message "Keep Fighting" on it.

Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews also sent him an autographed jersey.

"I don?t feel that inspirational," he said. "There?s no point in complaining about it. It is what it is."

On Saturday, Tebow trotted off the field and met Rainey and his family just after the Broncos finished pregame warm-ups. The Denver QB hugged Rainey?s entire contingent, and the two conversed for several minutes on the sideline.

"We?re just impressed with Tim, already having the foundation at such a young age, giving back to the community," said Rainey?s dad, Lee. "He understands what it?s all about ? not just wins and losses.

"We?ve always been big Tim Tebow fans before this," the elder Rainey said. "Now that he?s reached out to bring Jacob up to the game, he made the effort to make a difference."

Penn St AD: 'Deliberate, measured' coach search (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Penn State may still be without a replacement for fired coach Joe Paterno by the time the Nittany Lions play in the TicketCity Bowl on Jan. 2

The six-person search committee is taking a "very deliberate and measured approach to the process in order to identify the coach that best fits the requirements of the position," acting athletic director Dave Joyner said Thursday in a written statement.

School president Rodney Erickson and Joyner had both said they hoped to have a new coach before No. 24 Penn State's bowl game.

But Thursday, Joyner said a new coach would be introduced "at the appropriate time," and the statement offered no specific timeline.

Erickson was out of town Thursday for the holidays. Spokesman Bill Mahon said Joyner was providing Erickson with regular updates.

"I think they have both emphasized the most important element here is to get the right coach, not speed up the timing of the search," Mahon said. "There is no update on possible timing."

Longtime defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has been running the program on an interim basis since school trustees fired Paterno on Nov. 9 in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno is not a target of an into the Sandusky case by the state attorney general's office, though he was dismissed amid mounting criticism that school leaders should have done more to prevent alleged abuse. Sandusky, who has maintained his innocence, is awaiting trial.

Making a good hire, and soon, is generally seen as a critical step to secure the future of Penn State's storied football program. A couple of recruits have already revoked their commitments to the school in the wake of the Sandusky scandal.

Erickson said earlier this month one of the top criteria in the coaching search is "how that person would fit into the value system of Penn State, which clearly has to be honesty, integrity and commitment to excellence in academics."

According to Joyner, the school "is continuing to talk with individuals that we're interested in and work through the interview process." He called it a "very important hire for Penn State."

Bradley and defensive line coach Larry Johnson are among those who have been interviewed.

Green Bay quarterbacks coach Tom Clements was scheduled to have a phone interview last week, USA Today has reported. At Packers practice Thursday, Clements declined comment on whether he was interested in the job and would not confirm if he had interviewed for it.

Nebraska's Bo Pelini also emerged this week on the seemingly endless rumored list of potential college-level prospects. Pelini after practice Tuesday called the reports irresponsible and untrue, and said he had not interviewed at Penn State.

As for the Nittany Lions, players have gone home for the holidays. They are scheduled to regroup Monday in Dallas to prepare for the bowl game against No. 20 Houston.

Top Ten with a Twist: NFL Twitter accounts

A. Foster's Twitter account is deep, interesting and funny (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

For the hardcore NFL football fan, Twitter is necessary. Sometimes, it?s a necessary evil -- slogging through your timeline to read what some players are eating for lunch or trying to get through multiple RTs of fans who want a shout-out from their favorite NFL star can be quite tedious.

But there are players and executives who get the Twitter thing. Those who can put together a nice one-liner or turn a delicious phrase or break a bit of news. It?s a nice way for NFLers to communicate directly with fans and either inform them or make them laugh. In this day and age, Twitter is important (as much as any social media can truly be important).

That?s why, for the second-straight season, we?ve put together a Top Ten with a Twist list on the best NFL player/executive Twitter accounts. These people brighten our day 140 characters at a time, and since much of Twitter is tasteless swill, these are the people who keep us coming back for more. And that is something to RT about.

10. Shawn Andrews (@imshawnandrews): He was my No. 1 selection on last year?s list, but after he was released by the Giants in the offseason, Andrews is out of football. His Twitter account, though, remains look-worthy. If you?re a foodie, Andrews is for you, especially as he tries to appease the weight-watching angel on his shoulder while ignoring the devil who wants him to binge. Recent tweet: These Chick Fil A Chicken Strips In The Mall Taste Like They Been Dipped In A Lil Fish Grease!!! I Like It!!!!! ***Crunch***

9. John Elway (@johnelway): You?ve got to love it when the executive vice president of football operations for the Broncos breaks news on his Twitter account about team signings and coach hirings. Elway has been more transparent about his team?s front office moves than anybody I can remember, and doing it on Twitter is a really smart way to keep the lines of communications open with Broncos fans. His in-season account hasn?t been quite as entertaining as it was in the offseason, but still, give Elway credit. It has been a novel idea. Recent tweet: Tim's doing a great job leading our offense, coming through when we need him the most. He's a winner who gets better every day.

8. Darnell Dockett (@ddockett): The Cardinals defensive end is the definition of the athlete who just doesn?t give a crap what he says or how it might affect him in the future. Which is what makes his account awesome. His best Twitter moment of the year came when he did real-time play-by-play of a traffic stop. His topper, though, was when he refused to allow the police to search his car, and they simply had to let him go. Dockett can be offensive, but there?s little doubt he?s entertaining.? Even if his obsession with hooking up with Oprah is a little disturbing. Recent tweet: I'm going to sleep I'm so tired! I'm gonna dream about @Oprah and them thick chocolate thighs tonight. We gonna get back together soon!

7. Greg Aiello (@gregaiello): A return to the top Twitter list for the NFL?s top PR spokesman. Aiello answers questions from fans in his brusque manner, and he saves scribes e-mail queries but releasing league statements directly to the masses. Plus, his mini-feuds with some scribes during the lockout were interesting to watch from afar, and his haikus are not to be missed. Recent tweet: No. Hemingway. RT @giantspathanlon: Haiku? RT @gregaiello: A man in a good mood as the sun also rises. RT beautiful sight as the sun rises!

6. Jim Irsay (@JimIrsay): You just won?t find an NFL owner who is so in touch with his fans (and maybe not an sports team owner anywhere outside Mark Cuban). Irsay is delightfully weird, posting deep album cut lyrics by classic rock bands, and he made multiple jokes about going after Brett Favre at the beginning of the year when it was clear Peyton Manning couldn?t play. Lately, he?s been less funny and more soothing to an upset fan base. That doesn?t make him any less delightful. Recent tweet: Woke up this morning, with an arrow thru my nose..there was an indian in the corner..trying on my clothes.... .He said "Get lost" and walked towards his Cadillac..and I chopped down that palm tree..and it landed on his back....? (editor?s note: it?s a Neil Young lyric)?

5. Chad Ochocinco (@ochocinco): The Patriots receiver was more fun when he was still a Bengals receiver, and he (we assume) wasn?t hemmed in by Bill Belichick. But he?s still funny and still outstanding to his fans. Somehow, during the worst season of his career, he?s become much more likeable. Recent tweet: I remember when @evelynlozada kicked me out of the house for cheating.......... She takes #Monopoly way to (f------) serious.

C. Kluwe poses for a picture (US Presswire).4. Faux John Madden (@fauxjohnmadden): For me, parody accounts are hit or miss. Mostly misses, actually. Faux John Madden hits much more than it misses, though. And when you?re crawling through your timeline on a lonely Friday night, that is much appreciated. Recent tweet: If you need something to keep you awake while watching this Falcons-Jaguars game.. Call Sam Hurd.

3. Jim Schwartz (@jschwartzlions): By far, the best NFL coach on Twitter (hell, off the top of my head, I can?t think of another coach who?s actually on Twitter). Mostly, he taps out updates of the Metallica songs he?s inputting into his head (or tweeting a picture of Raiders fans flipping him the bird), but you have to appreciate a guy who takes a little time out from watching film and game planning all day to remind us all what James Hetfield had to say in 1987. Recent tweet: #nowplaying on the way to Oakland stadium: Babylon AD "Bang Go the Bells", Metallica "Blackened", Deep Purple "Highway Star"

2. Chris Kluwe (@chriswarcraft): As his Twitter handle implies, the Vikings punter is big into role-playing games. So, you have to wade through some of that, but Kluwe makes his tweets so damn funny, it?s nearly impossible not to be entertained by his musings. He?s a guy who knows how to make great use of the hashtag. Recent tweet: Remember Saints fans, if you're planning on bringing feminine hygiene products to the game to throw at me, please ensure they are unused.

1. Arian Foster (@arianfoster): He?s not only one of the top running backs in the league, he?s also a Zen master on his Twitter account. Foster is one of the game?s most interesting thinkers, and his tweets aren?t the usual athletic bluster. They?re deep and interesting and funny. Which is why he?s the No. 1 NFL tweeter around. Recent tweet: I smile at our potential, but weep for our actions. May the light you see tonight fill your heart with what it needs. I love you all.

At least 61 dead in northeast Nigeria violence

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) ? At least 61 people have been killed during several days of fighting in northeast Nigeria between security forces and a radical Muslim sect responsible for a series of increasingly bloody attacks in Africa's most populous nation, authorities said Saturday.

The fighting between suspected members of the sect known as Boko Haram and a joint task force of police and military began Thursday in Borno and Yobe states in Nigeria's arid northeast corner bordering Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The fighting left residents cowering in their homes amid gunfire and explosions.

At least 50 people have died in Damaturu and Potiskum in Yobe state during the fighting, local police commissioner Lawan Tanko told The Associated Press on Saturday. In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, a mortuary official who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter told the AP at least 11 bodies had been brought in from the fighting.

The violence left at least two senior police officers dead in Yobe state, while a military spokesman in Borno said that three churches had been bombed during attacks there.

In Yobe state, the fighting became so intense that the military ordered those living in a neighborhood surrounding Damaturu's central mosque to evacuate. After a deadline, soldiers riding in armored personnel carriers and tanks drove into the neighborhood shooting, Tanko said.

"We were able to kill 12 of the Boko Haram armed sect and bombers," Tanko said. The police commissioner said officers also recovered Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition and explosives.

Boko Haram has launched a series of bombings against Nigeria's weak central government over the last year in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across the nation of more than 160 million people home to both Christians and Muslims.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Nov. 4 attack on Damaturu, Yobe state's capital, that killed more than 100 people. The group also claimed the Aug. 24 suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria's capital that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

Little is known about the sources of Boko Haram's support, though its members recently began carrying out a wave of bank robberies in the north. Police stations also have been bombed and officers killed.

Boko Haram has splintered into three factions, with one wing increasingly willing to kill as it maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia, diplomats and security sources say.

The sect is responsible for more than 450 killings in Nigeria this year alone, according to an AP count.

Atheist intellectual Christopher Hitchens dead at 62 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? British-born journalist and atheist intellectual Christopher Hitchens, who made the United States his home and backed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, died on Thursday at the age of 62.

Hitchens died in Houston of pneumonia, a complication of cancer of the esophagus, Vanity Fair magazine said.

"Christopher Hitchens - the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant - died today at the age of 62," Vanity Fair said.

A heavy smoker and drinker, Hitchens cut short a book tour for his memoir "Hitch 22" last year to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer.

As a journalist, war correspondent and literary critic, Hitchens carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of public figures and a fierce intelligence.

In his 2007 book "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," Hitchens took on major religions with his trenchant atheism. He argued that religion was the source of all tyranny and that many of the world's evils have been done in the name of religion.

The son of a British naval officer, Hitchens studied at Oxford University and worked as literary critic for the New Statesman magazine in London before moving to New York to work as a journalist in 1981. He settled in Washington the following year, initially as correspondent for the left-wing magazine The Nation. He retained his British citizenship when he became an American citizen in 2007.

Hitchens was not one to mince words. In his book on Bill Clinton "No one left to lie to", he called the former U.S. president a "rapist" and a "con man." He once referred to Mother Teresa of Calcutta as a "fanatical Albanian dwarf."

The author of 25 books - including works on Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine and George Orwell - and countless articles and columns, Hitchens never lost his biting humor.

"CANCER ELITE"

"I'm a member of a cancer elite. I rather look down on people with lesser cancers," Hitchens said in an interview with CBS "60 Minutes" aired on March 6, 2011.

In a 2010 interview with Reuters, Hitchens dismissed criticism that he moved from left to right and helped former U.S. President George W. Bush sell the 2003 war with Iraq to the American public with what turned out to be bad intelligence about weapons of mass destruction.

"Saddam was an enemy of the civilized world and he should have been taken out a long time before," Hitchens said of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. "I have no regrets about that at all."

The 2001 attacks on the United States by Islamic fundamentalists in hijacked passenger planes made Hitchens ever more critical of the role of religion in the world, and led him to appreciate the merits of American democracy.

"I am absolutely convinced that the main source of hatred in the world is religion, and organized religion," he wrote.

Hitchens is survived by his wife, Carol Blue; their daughter, Antonia; and his children from a previous marriage, Alexander and Sophia, Vanity Fair said.

In his last essay on www.vanityfair.com, dated "January 2012," Hitchens said his illness made him question the saying attributed to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche that "Whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger."

A painkiller injection just before typing the article titled "Trial of the Will," Hitchens wrote, caused "numbness in the extremities, filling me with the not irrational fear that I shall lose the ability to write. Without that ability, I feel sure in advance, my 'will to live' would be hugely attenuated."

Blagojevich filing accuses juror of misconduct (AP)

CHICAGO ? Attorneys for impeached Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich have asked a judge for an emergency evidentiary hearing on what they say is potential misconduct by the foreman at his corruption retrial.

A defense filing Friday with U.S. District Court in Chicago says if Connie Wilson is found to have violated court rules that "must result in a new trial."

The request comes after Blagojevich was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Blagojevich must report to prison in March.

Blagojevich's lawyers complain that Wilson has made multiple public appearances to discuss the retrial earlier this year. They say she appears to have violated a court order by possessing a questionnaire from the retrial and using it in at least one public presentation.

Wilson did not respond to a telephone message seeking comment.

Gunshots, explosions heard in west Kabul: witness (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? Several suicide bombers attacked a police station in the west of the Afghan capital Kabul on Friday, a police source said.

"At least four suicide bombers carried out an attack on a police station," the source said, adding that one bomber detonated his explosives. Police were still fighting the others, who were armed with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, the source said.

Earlier, a Reuters witness heard gunfire and at least two explosions.

The Taliban generally target military personnel or foreigners, such as in the attack on a convoy of NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) vehicles in late October, which killed 13. That attack was also in the west of the city, an area which does not have a high concentration of foreign residents.

A huge suicide bomb killed 80 people at a Shi'ite Muslim shrine in Kabul last week, an attack the Taliban condemned.

Researchers demonstrate an almost noiseless nanomechanical microwave amplifier

Thursday, December 15, 2011

Physicists in Aalto University, Finland, have shown how a nanomechanical oscillator can be used for detection and amplification of feeble radio waves or microwaves. A measurement using such a tiny device, resembling a miniaturized guitar string, can be performed with the least possible disturbance. The results were recently published in the most prestigious scientific arena, the British journal Nature.

The researchers cooled the nanomechanical oscillator, thousand times thinner than a human hair, down to a low temperature near the absolute zero at -273 centigrade. Under such extreme conditions, even nearly macroscopic sized objects follow the laws of quantum physics which often contradict common sense. In the Low Temperature Laboratory experiments, the nearly billion atoms comprising the nanomechanical resonator were oscillating in pace in their shared quantum state.

The scientists had fabricated the device in contact with a superconducting cavity resonator, which exchanges energy with the nanomechanical resonator. This allowed amplification of their resonant motion. This is very similar to what happens in a guitar, where the string and the echo chamber resonate at the same frequency. Instead of the musician playing the guitar string, the energy source was provided by a microwave laser.

Microwaves get amplified by interaction of quantum oscillations

Researchers from the Low Temperature Laboratory, Aalto University, have shown how to detect and amplify electromagnetic signals almost noiselessly using a guitar-string like mechanical vibrating wire. In the ideal case the method adds only the minimum amount of noise required by quantum mechanics.

The presently used semiconductor transistor amplifiers are complicated and noisy devices, and operate far away from a fundamental disturbance limit set by quantum physics. The Low Temperature Laboratory scientists showed that by taking advantage of the quantum resonant motion, injected microwave radiation can be amplified with little disturbance. The principle hence allows for detecting much weaker signals than usually.

Any measurement method or device always adds some disturbance. Ideally, all the noise is due vacuum fluctuations predicted by quantum mechanics. In theory, our principle reaches this fundamental limit. In the experiment, we got very close to this limit, says Dr. Francesco Massel.

The discovery was actually quite unexpected. We were aiming to cool the nanomechanical resonator down to its quantum ground state. The cooling should manifest as a weakening of a probing signal, which we observed. But when we slightly changed the frequency of the microwave laser, we saw the probing signal to strengthen enormously. We had created a nearly quantum limited microwave amplifier, says Academy Research Fellow Mika Sillanp?? who planned the project and made the measurements.

Certain real-life applications will benefit from the better amplifier based on the new Aalto method, but reaching this stage requires more research effort. Most likely, the mechanical microwave amplifier will be first applied in related basic research, which will further expand our knowledge of the borderline between the everyday world and the quantum realm.

According to Academy Research Fellow Tero Heikkil?, the beauty of the amplifier is in its simplicity: it consists of two coupled oscillators. Therefore, the same method can be realized in basically any media. By using a different structure of the cavity, one could detect terahertz radiation which would also be a major application.

Experts stumped by ancient Jerusalem markings (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Mysterious stone carvings made thousands of years ago and recently uncovered in an excavation underneath Jerusalem have archaeologists stumped.

Israeli diggers who uncovered a complex of rooms carved into the bedrock in the oldest section of the city recently found the markings: Three "V" shapes cut next to each other into the limestone floor of one of the rooms, about 2 inches (5 centimeters) deep and 20 inches (50 centimeters) long. There were no finds to offer any clues pointing to the identity of who made them or what purpose they served.

The archaeologists in charge of the dig know so little that they have been unable even to posit a theory about their nature, said Eli Shukron, one of the two directors of the dig.

"The markings are very strange, and very intriguing. I've never seen anything like them," Shukron said.

The shapes were found in a dig known as the City of David, a politically sensitive excavation conducted by Israeli government archaeologists and funded by a nationalist Jewish group under the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan in east Jerusalem. The rooms were unearthed as part of the excavation of fortifications around the ancient city's only natural water source, the Gihon spring.

It is possible, the dig's archaeologists say, that when the markings were made at least 2,800 years ago the shapes might have accommodated some kind of wooden structure that stood inside them, or they might have served some other purpose on their own. They might have had a ritual function or one that was entirely mundane. Archaeologists faced by a curious artifact can usually at least venture a guess about its nature, but in this case no one, including outside experts consulted by Shukron and the dig's co-director, archaeologists with decades of experience between them, has any idea.

There appears to be at least one other ancient marking of the same type at the site. A century-old map of an expedition led by the British explorer Montague Parker, who searched for the lost treasures of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem between 1909 and 1911, includes the shape of a "V" drawn in an underground channel not far away. Modern archaeologists haven't excavated that area yet.

Ceramic shards found in the rooms indicate they were last used around 800 B.C., with Jerusalem under the rule of Judean kings, the dig's archaeologists say. At around that time, the rooms appear to have been filled with rubble to support the construction of a defensive wall.

It is unclear, however, whether they were built in the time of those kings or centuries earlier by the Canaanite residents who predated them.

The purpose of the complex is part of the riddle. The straight lines of its walls and level floors are evidence of careful engineering, and it was located close to the most important site in the city, the spring, suggesting it might have had an important function.

A unique find in a room beside the one with the markings ? a stone like a modern grave marker, which was left upright when the room was filled in ? might offer a clue. Such stones were used in the ancient Middle East as a focal point for ritual or a memorial for dead ancestors, the archaeologists say, and it is likely a remnant of the pagan religions which the city's Israelite prophets tried to eradicate. It is the first such stone to be found intact in Jerusalem excavations.

But the ritual stone does not necessarily mean the whole complex was a temple. It might simply have marked a corner devoted to religious practice in a building whose purpose was commonplace.

With the experts unable to come up with a theory about the markings, the City of David dig posted a photo on its Facebook page and solicited suggestions. The results ranged from the thought-provoking ? "a system for wood panels that held some other item," or molds into which molten metal would could have been poured ? to the fanciful: ancient Hebrew or Egyptian characters, or a "symbol for water, particularly as it was near a spring."

The City of David dig, where the carvings were found, is the most high-profile and politically contentious excavation in the Holy Land. Named for the biblical monarch thought to have ruled from the spot 3,000 years ago, the dig is located in what today is east Jerusalem, which was captured by Israel in 1967. Palestinians claim that part of the city as the capital of a future state.

The dig is funded by Elad, an organization affiliated with the Israeli settlement movement. The group also moves Jewish families into the neighborhood and elsewhere in east Jerusalem in an attempt to render impossible any division of the city in a future peace deal.

Palestinians and some Israeli archaeologists have criticized the dig for what they say is an excessive focus on Jewish remains. The dig's archaeologists, who work under the auspices of the government's Israel Antiquities Authority, deny that charge.

US volunteers in North Korea to build homes (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? A group of Americans is in North Korea to kick off a project to build 50 homes for families working at a tree farm outside Pyongyang.

Six volunteers affiliated with the Fuller Center for Housing arrived Tuesday. Their trip comes at a time of improving relations between the U.S. and North Korea.

The 50-unit project will house the families of workers at a tree nursery in Osan-ri.

Participants with the nonprofit Fuller Center say they'll be working side by side with North Koreans to build the homes.

They're aiming to finish three homes this week, and other volunteers are expected to arrive in coming months to help complete the project.

In Americus, Georgia, Fuller Center President David Snell called the project a "true mission of peace."

The United States and North Korea fought on opposite sides of the Korean War and do not have diplomatic relations. Diplomats from the two countries recently held talks about resuming six-nation nuclear disarmament talks.

Wash. farm town dreads high-profile murder retrial (AP)

EPHRATA, Wash. ? Nearly eight years have passed since police found the battered body of 13-year-old Craig Sorger in a central Washington park, the victim of a beating and stabbing so brutal the tip of a knife was left in his skull.

His alleged assailants: two 12-year-old playmates, who proclaimed their innocence for months before one agreed to testify against his friend in a plea deal.

The 2003 murder painfully divided this Eastern Washington farm community settled between fields of dry sagebrush and irrigated alfalfa. Prosecutors doggedly pursued the case for three years amid national media attention and fighting between three families, until a jury convicted one boy and a judge sentenced him to 26 years.

Now the Washington state Court of Appeals has thrown out the conviction on a judge's error and ordered a new trial, to the dismay of the victim's family, prosecutors and community leaders who fear the emotional upheaval of another exhausting, expensive trial.

There won't be any teenagers in court this time around, said Grant County Deputy Prosecutor Ed Owens, who helped try the case the first time. But there's sure to be plenty of sorrow for a community still divided and still healing from "heavy wounds."

"It's the family, it's the victims, it's the whole community," Owens said. "This case was hard on everyone, and to have to go through it again is just sad."

Ephrata, population 7,700, sits about 125 miles east of Seattle surrounded by developed farm land and sagebrush. Railroad tracks run parallel to the main street in town, ferrying grain and other crops from silos and warehouses to the West Coast for export.

Residents endured a tough year in 2003 with a police shooting, a toddler's death following repeated abuse and the drowning of an 11-year-old boy in the city pool. Hundreds of people in the nearby town of Entiat signed a Christmas card to boost the community's spirits.

Then there was Craig Sorger's killing Feb. 15 at a recreational vehicle park.

Sorger was last seen playing with two 12-year-olds, Jake Eakin and Evan Savoie, and his mother reported him missing when he didn't return home. Police found his body in a mix of brush and leaves.

A medical examiner determined he had been beaten and stabbed 34 times.

Police said there were discrepancies in the playmates' stories and blood on their clothing. They proclaimed their innocence for two years, even appearing on national television, but Eakin ultimately led police to the murder weapon ? a knife that matched the missing tip ? and agreed to testify against Savoie in a plea deal.

Prosecutors tried Savoie as an adult, one of the youngest such defendants in state history, and a jury convicted him of first-degree murder.

The case ultimately cost the county and the state, which pitched in to help pay for the high-profile trial, more than $1 million.

Through it all, the three boys' families ran into each other at the gas station and in grocery stores, and residents picked sides of the arguments. Defense attorneys alleged family members might have killed Sorger, a special education student who struggled socially, sparking outrage from his parents.

When the family's medical records were inadvertently released, the trial judge appointed an attorney to represent their interests ? a point the appeals court faulted in its ruling.

The court ultimately overturned the guilty verdict and ordered a new trial on grounds that the judge also violated Savoie's right to a public trial by closing the courtroom to hear arguments on a motion.

Undoubtedly, new residents to town aren't familiar with the case, but plenty of people still remember the horror of such a random act, city administrator Wes Crago said.

And they're frustrated with a retrial, he said.

"This is a fairly small community. You've got basketball games, you're sitting next to each other in church, running into one another at the grocery store," he said. "It's tough."

Prosecutor D. Angus Lee, who was elected to office in 2009, received calls from concerned citizens with no ties to the case after the order for a retrial.

"This case is very important to a lot of people in this community on an emotional level," he said. "I can't control what was done five years ago by the court. All I can do is make sure we do our job and get a conviction."

He noted that the appeals court didn't rule on the validity of the evidence. He also said he doesn't expect the case to cost as much the second time, in part because the investigative work is already done.

However, the county will have to pay travel expenses for a judge from a neighboring county to handle the case, because none of the Grant County judges can hear it: One judge tried the case when he was prosecutor, and the other two were recused after defense attorneys raised affidavits of prejudice against them during the first trial.

Monty Hormel, who has represented Savoie since he was charged in juvenile court, also asked to be assigned for the upcoming trial ? at no charge.

"I didn't feel he got a fair shake the first time, and I want to make damn sure he does this time around," he said, putting his arm around his wife and choking up as he speaks about his client.

"We have spent a good portion of our life trying to protect this young man," he said. "I have a lot of faith in him."

The victim's mother, Lisa Sorger, declined to comment on the case. She and her younger son, now a U.S. Marine, will likely to be called to testify again.

Theresa Wallace, 43, a longtime Ephrata resident, doesn't know the Sorger family but said she and many other residents want to see justice for Craig, a skinny, blonde boy who liked Hot Wheels and catching turtles.

"For such a small community, learning that something so gruesome could happen, and they're just kids..." her voice trailed off as she recalled hearing about the murder. "It's just very sad, eight years later, to go through it again."
