Homemade tech to reduce India's cyber threats

India should be using only locally-developed technology to fend off cyberespionage activities as foreign-made equipment can be manipulated by other countries for spying.

According to a report by the Economic Times on Sunday, cybersecurity analyst Jiten Jain said there are countries which are subsidizing their domestic IT companies to sell products abroad below cost prices in order to facilitate spying on other nations. This happens not just between feuding nations, but among friendly countries too, he said.

"Only using complete, indigenously-developed technology can save [India] from espionage," Jain said.

The cybersecurity analyst added telecom networks and smartphones can be bugged, and there have been cases in which the equipment automatically updates itself without the user's knowledge. Malware is also evolving and can self-destruct or be programmed for one-time use during the critical stage of a hack, he said.

The report added that Indian authorities urged ethical hackers to work with them to spread awareness and detect vulnerabilities in the networks.

In 2011, a Malaysian university professor expressed similar sentiments as Jain. The professor said Malaysia must develop its own IT security software to reduce data leaks and intelligence breaches from foreign software.

Pests, which include insects like bees and wasps, and rodents like rats and mice, can be really hazardous both to human health and to structures and buildings. Especially when aggravated and provoked, such pests can inflict painful bites and stings, causing different reactions like pain and allergies, with some even becoming life threatening. Sadly, a research done by Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in UK revealed a tenfold increase in the number of councils that are no longer providing pest control services. The good news, however, is that you have the option to get rid of pests on your own, or have an Islington pest control professional do the job for you. In Islington, many companies are already available, offering different pest control services for different types of pests. The process often starts from home inspection -- which includes identification of sources of infestations, the amount of infestation and how much the infestation has damaged the structure. If you have chosen to hire an N1 pest control expert, the service provider would offer suggestions for pest extermination while considering the concerns you may have about the processes. Also, while an expert may have specific strategies and methods for certain situations, they may tailor their actions to ensure that they do not just apply the best treatment but also employ pest control techniques that you are comfortable with. The process also includes the use of either chemical or non-chemical type of extermination. The fastest way of eliminating pests and the most commonly used by experts is chemical extermination, or the use of insecticide sprays or powder. Experts generally use chemicals and compounds that are specifically designed to kill pests, and at the same time prevent damage to structures. Meanwhile, especially if you are doing the process on your own, you may also choose to use non-chemical pest control methods, such as habitat modification, elimination of possible hiding spots for pests, and application of pest-baiting or trapping systems. For a small infestation, or an infestation that has just started to grow, eradicating pests on your own may be wiser. There are several products that are easily accessible in the market. Some of the basic tools, which may already be kept at your house, include a mini flashlight, screwdriver, dusting equipment, baits gun and spray rigs, as well as safety equipment including chemical gloves and goggles. Meanwhile, if the infestation has gotten serious and has grown into something that is difficult to handle, asking help from an expert may be your best option. Islington pest control companies offer diverse services, including emergency services like removing hives and nests, as well as killing pests that have started to plague your home; pretreatment of newly constructed homes and buildings which include sealing corners that can be potential avenues of entry for pests; and infestation inspections and sanitation services. Some companies also offer follow-up services.

Offering different types of pest control and treatment for different types of pests, we are one of the most reliable Islington pest control companies you can rely on. Visit our website for more information about the effective N1 pest controlservices we offer.

Insert Coin: Botiful telepresence robot for Android (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Insert Coin Botiful telepresence robot for Android video

Remote-controlled cameras are nothing new -- heck, some even ride atop robotic vacuums -- but this Android smartphone-powered device delivers quite a bit of versatility in a petite package with a reasonable price tag to boot. Botiful, a "social telepresence robot," serves as a roving platform for your Android smartphone. You can move the handset (and its front-facing camera) up and down as it speeds along any flat surface, responding to commands from someone on the other end of a Skype video chat. Once you connect the device to your Android phone through Bluetooth or USB, you can control its direction from a pop-up window within Skype, letting you position Botiful however you see fit. If your Android phone doesn't have a front-facing camera, you can flip it around to use the rear shooter -- of course, you won't be able to see the display in this configuration, so it won't be ideal for two-way chats. Naturally, this makes the duo a natural choice for surveillance and baby monitoring, but it can also be used to provide a more immersive experience during conference calls or for sending back video from locations that aren't easily accessible, such as the undercarriage of a car.

Designed in a garage in California (no, really), Botiful is already functional, with working software as well. The current configuration requires Skype for control, though an SDK will allow developers to create other control apps for the device -- and who knows, the seemingly capable inventor could release another tool of her own before it's set to hit production later this year. With much of the design already completed, the project sponsor is turning to Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to launch Botiful to production -- the device could ship as soon as November if it reaches a $90,000 goal before August 22nd. Available in white, blue or red, the remote-controlled rig is currently only compatible with Android, though iOS support may come if funding exceeds a $100k threshold. There's still more than three weeks to go to make your pledge, with a limited number of pre-order slots available for $199 (retail pricing is expected to come in at $299). Hit up the source link below to show your support.

Hearing Aid Assessment: What to Expect | Hearing

Health and Fitness | Hearing | * Written by Diana Worthy | Friday, 27 July 2012 17:33 | Word Count: 562

Upon making the decision to have an evaluation of your candidacy for hearing aids, there are a few things you should be able to expect. A thorough, detailed hearing assessment should be completed. There is typically associated charges, but ask your hearing healthcare provider's office when scheduling the appointment. Not all insurance companies will cover auditory evaluations. Overall the appointment can be expected to last 30-60 minutes.

You will most likely be asked to provide a history of your medical and hearing health. Medical conditions and even medications you are taking can affect your hearing. Thus, it is important that you are open, candid, and thorough in your history. The main goal of the initial evaluation will be to rule out any medically treatable or non-treatable conditions prior to determining your amplification candidacy.

Otoscopy will be performed prior to your hearing evaluation. This simply involves the hearing healthcare professional taking a lighted magnifier (otoscope), gently pulling back on your ear, and looking into your ear canal. They will be looking for signs of any excessive or impacted wax or other visible outer and middle ear conditions. Once the ears are determined clear for testing, the actual behavioral testing will begin.

You should be seated comfortably in a sound booth or sound-proof room. While some providers may suggest a quiet room is enough for making test measurements, results cannot necessarily be deemed valid or accurate. Ambient noise levels in these situations may make your results appear worse than they are. A variety of tests may be completed based on your hearing needs.

Pure tone audiometry is almost always completed. This is a behavioral test of your hearing sensitivity in each ear. You hear tones that get softer, and will be asked to indicate when the sound was heard (e.g., "raise your hand each time you hear a sound").

Other testing may include evaluation of your loudness discomfort level to determine your tolerance to loud sound; speech testing and speech-in-noise testing to measure your ability to detect speech and understand speech in the presence of background noise; and/or acceptable noise level evaluation to determine your background noise tolerance. Some clinics may also take objective measurements of your middle ear and inner ear functioning. Your hearing healthcare provider will be able to determine which test battery is best for you!

You should expect to hear test results immediately following the evaluation. The hearing healthcare professional should provide you with a thorough explanation of your results, including: if a hearing problem is present, the severity of the problem, the possible contributing factors to the loss, information related to medically treatable conditions you may have, and further recommendations for treatment and management. If hearing aids are an option for you, a variety of types and styles of aids will be discussed and recommendations will be made for you!

Top 10:

A Killer Without Regret by Deborah Blum:

In the summer of 1920, a 29-year-old son of Minnesota farmers docked his boat (acquired with stolen money) at a small island in New York City?s East River. One by one he hired out-of-work sailors to crew for him. And one by one, he shot them in the head with a Colt .45 and dumped their bodies in the water. Before he was executed in 1930, Carl Panzram put the sailor body tally at 10 although he estimated that was only about half his total murder count. ?For all these things, I am not in the least sorry,? he wrote in a jail house confessional. ?I was so full of hate that there was no room in me for such feelings as love, pity, kindness or honor or decency.??

The marathon & Olympic movement on Huffington Post by Greg Downey:

Many people think they know the story of the very first ?marathon.? Pheidippides, reputedly the fastest man in the Greek army, allegedly ran from the battlefield at Marathon twenty-five miles to Athens in 490 BCE to announce a Greek victory over the invading Persians. Bolting into the Athenian assembly, he shouted, ??????? (nikomen), ?We have won!? and promptly keeled over dead?.

Gal?pagos Monday: The People Problem by Virginia Hughes:

?Two-thirds of the jobs on the islands are in the service sector. The tourists come, of course, because of the amazing plants and animals. They contribute money directly to conservation efforts, and their patronage boots the economy and allows the government to set up its own conservation management systems. That?s all great, except ? more people also means more: ships, construction, roads, vehicles, hotels, restaurants, water and energy use, garbage, and sewage. All of that threatens the habitats and health of the plants and animals. In other words, the whole thing is unsustainable. The growing economy in the Gal?pagos is simultaneously supporting more science and conservation efforts and destroying the things that need to be studied and conserved. The economy is eating itself?.

Geometry Proves Sheep Are Selfish Jerks by Elizabeth Preston:

Sometimes what looks like friendly behavior is really an attempt to get one?s neighbor eaten by a wolf before oneself. Sheep, for instance, seem cozy enough in their flocks. What?s a better way to travel than surrounded by 100 percent merino? But the real reason they stick close to their neighbors is to save their own woolly rear ends?

Noisy sex means death for flies if bats are listening by Ed Yong:

Some folks just can?t help being loud in bed, but noisy liaisons can lead to a swift death? at least for a housefly. In a German cowshed, Natterer?s bats eavesdrop on mating flies, homing in on their distinctive sexual buzzes?.

Wisconsin frac sand sites double by Kate Prengaman:

Tucked behind a hill in rural Trempealeau County, farmland undergoes an industrial transformation. Outside this city of 1,300, Preferred Sands turns Wisconsin?s sandy soil into a hot commodity. A wall of green trees opens to a vast expanse of sand buzzing with activity. Excavators mine and conveyors carry the sand from towering stockpiles up into the processing plant. Every week, this facility ships 7,500 tons of sand by rail to oil and gas fields in Texas, North Dakota and Pennsylvania. ?

Language Serves the Group by Edmund Blair Bolles:

Steven Pinker has posted an important essay on group selection. You can gather its thesis from the title, ?The False Allure of Group Selection.? Since I am on record saying that group selection (really, multilevel selection) was critical to the evolution of language, I read the essay with strong interest. Let me say right off that I was astonished to find that the essay makes no remarks about the evolution of language. Pinker is a famous proponent of language?s evolutionary origins and biological basis, but he says nothing of group selection and language. Instead he criticizes ideas that group selection explains religion, culture, and nations. I am skeptical of those claims too. Pinker is a fine writer and I got several chuckles out of his examination of various shallow appeals to group selection. Was I laughing at my own doom??

Ending the AIDS epidemic by John Rennie:

Thirty-one years into the HIV epidemic, health authorities are finally starting to sound hopeful about the prospects for curbing it. If that sentence sounds bitter or sarcastic, it isn?t meant to be. Rather, it?s an honest assessment of how long and frequently depressing the era of HIV and AIDS has been, and of how much misery it has spawned. But it also acknowledges reasons to think that maybe, just maybe that?s beginning to change?.

Ending U.S. chimpanzee laboratories will save chimpanzee research by Brian Hare:

?The non-lab research model has now become the dominant research model. In my area of research a collection of just five zoos and African sanctuaries recently published more scientific papers in higher impact journals than all five active U.S. chimpanzee laboratories. These non-lab researchers contributed data relevant to fighting HIV, Malaria, Parkinson?s, Autism, Alzheimer?s, and a myriad of other human ailments. They did this while studying chimpanzees that live life freely in extremely enriched environments. ?

One way to successfully invade a habitat: eat the competition by Jeremy Yoder:

The Asian Harlequin ladybug, Harmonia axyridis, eats aphids like they?re Popplers, and it?s been repeatedly introduced into the U.S. and Europe to do exactly that. But since it was first introduced, H. axyridis has spread of its own accord, and displaced native ladybugs. This isn?t just because the Harlequin ladybug eats more aphids, or breeds faster, than the locals; it looks like part of the Harlequin?s success is due to the fact that it eats its native competition?.

Ethics Bob Comments on the Penn State ... - Pilant's Business Ethics

I really enjoyed Ethics Bob?s concluding paragraph which I include below. Of course, for the real flavor of the article, you need to read it all and the link is just below the quoted section.

James Pilant

Penn State: do the sanctions punish the innocent? ? Ethics Bob

What?s being taken away from the Penn State students is an illusion?the illusion that the quality of their college years depends on football championships. College years are a time for shedding childish illusions. Perhaps the innocent students aren?t being punished at all: they?re learning what?s important in the world. That?s a big part of what they are going to college for.

Tricks On How To Get Good Auto Insurance Rates | articlereference ...

In order to save the most amount of money on auto insurance, you need to thoroughly check the particular company?s discounts. Every company is going to offer different discounts for different drivers, and they aren?t really obligated to tell you. Do your homework and ask around. You should be able to find some great discounts.

Being an auto dealership can have it?s insurance perks. You must maintain insurance policies on the vehicles you carry, but you can get a deal for this through dealers insurance. These policies will allow you to drive any of the company owned cars, essentially eliminating the need for personal auto insurance.

Before purchasing auto insurance, check your driving record. If you do not know what is on your driving record, you can always speak with your local Department of Motor Vehicles. If you see that certain tickets or points are about to come off your record, wait until then to purchase auto insurance. This will make your premiums cheaper.

Not only is auto insurance mandatory, but valuable. Purchasing insurance for your vehicle is a daunting task, as there are lots of options to explore. You want to shop around, perhaps by calling around using the listings in your phone book or by using the internet. Once you find a comfortable price and coverage plan for your automobile then you can be sure if you are in an accident or pulled over by the police you?re protected.

The best automobile insurance tips are the ones you?re able to think of on the fly. For example: If you?re contacting the insurer and asking questions, no one knows your particular situation better than you. Just make sure you cover all the angles here and ask questions that are pertinent to your situation.

Some vehicles generate a surcharge on auto insurance policies. If you are considering purchasing a high-performance vehicle, a classic auto or any other type of unique vehicle, make sure you check on the potential increase in insurance costs. Surcharges can mount quickly and are often avoidable, although you may need to select a less appealing vehicle!

To get the best deals on car insurance you should be sure to understand the types of policies. This is because there are many types of coverage and they each protect you in different situations. Some of them will be more expensive but also provide higher coverage, while others will be much cheaper but not protect you as much.

It?s important to understand what can happen if you are in an accident with an uninsured driver. This situation is covered with uninsured motorist protection. This coverage covers any injuries that are caused to you or the occupants of your car by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. All policy holders indirectly contribute to this fund. Your policy would be cheaper if everybody obeyed the law and got the required cover. Still, it?s good to know that you will be taken care of should an uninsured driver collide with you.

Look around and do some ?window shopping?. Get quotes from various auto insurance firms, but don?t be bullied into accepting right then. Take that quote and compare it to another you get from a separate firm. Do not commit to anything until you have reviewed all choices and you are going to save money somewhere in the mix.

If your car is more than 10 years old, you might want to consider dropping the comprehensive portion of your auto insurance. You may be paying more for that portion then your older car is worth. Instead, save the extra money and use it when the time comes to buy a new automobile.

Are you looking for the most economical auto insurance coverage you can find? You must be certain to include all of the discounts when shopping for an auto insurance policy. For example, do you qualify for the safe driver discount? Does the company offer a discount for your vehicle?s safety equipment? Are you over 55? Be sure to include all of the discounts you qualify for and you will see a big difference in the cost of your insurance.

When trying to settle your auto insurance claim don?t just settle for the person who calls you first. If you don?t like their offer, ask to speak to their supervisor, and their supervisor and so forth until you get the result you want. Since they don?t want you complaining to your friends and family, you have a good bargaining chip.

Remove drivers that are on your insurance policy if they are no longer driving. Having inactive drivers just may your increase premium higher than it should be. It is best that as soon as this person stops driving you call your insurance company right away and have them removed.

In certain states your auto insurance premium will go down if you take a course to improve your driving skills. Find out more about this at your local secretary of state or department of motor vehicle. You should not trust any other resources to find an approved driving course.

Olympians Face Unique Health Insurance Options - Kaiser Health ...

You might not have the physique of an Olympic athlete, but you could have health insurance like one.

That's the point of a series of ads this year from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, the official supplier of health insurance for Team USA.

Highmark's?"PPO Blue" plan covers about 1.4 million Americans. Among them?are about 1,000 elite athletes who, along with?more than 360 U.S. Olympic Committee employees,?get?coverage through the Elite Athlete Health Insurance program.

The Olympic hopefuls often have other policies, too, especially given their high risk for injury and?EAHI's very high?deductible. Still, the plan provides what the USOC describes as "a level of?base?support ... in order to minimize the out-of-pocket expenses incurred by insured athletes for costs of medical care."?????

"It's a similar plan with similar benefits to those people might have through an employer," said Steven Nelson, a senior vice president with Highmark. PPO Blue is also available on the individual market.

Nelson would not provide specific details about the USOC health plan, which offers preventive services and other benefits, both in the U.S. and overseas. Nelson did say that the committee can tailor its plan to the demands of athletes, such as physical therapy benefits. The USOC also did not provide comment on?plan specifics.

Performance Determines Eligibility

The public likely wouldn't expect Olympians to incur many health care expenses, given their excellent physical condition. But that isn't the case, according to Jeffrey Potteiger, an exercise science researcher at Grand Valley State University.

"The reality is these athletes see physicians and trainers at a greater rate than average," Potteiger said. "Any minor breakdown in health can have a major effect on performance."

Mark Hutchinson, director of sports medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago, agreed. Having worked with members of the U.S. gymnastics, basketball and field hockey teams, Hutchinson said that elite athletes see their doctor for an illness much sooner than the average person because getting proper medication early can shorten recovery time.

Like many other health plans, EAHI covers prescriptions and visits to the doctor, with higher charges for out-of-network care. But, as evidenced by its name, the Elite Athlete Health Insurance program is also highly selective. The 1,000 or so policies offered by the USOC are divided among the national groups that govern individual sports ? for summer, winter and Paralympic Games ? and each group sets its own requirements for eligibility.

USA Swimming, for example, is allocated 56 policies. Olympic team members are given the first crack at the coverage, followed by the top-ranked swimmers in each event who did not make the team. Similarly,?USA Badminton has five policies it first offers to its Olympic team members, with the next level of priority given to players with the highest Badminton World Federation ranking.?USA Track and Field has 150 and first gives access to athletes in its top two performance tiers, which includes athletes who medaled at the 2008 Games or medaled at a recent major championship.

For athletes, EAHI is one of many options, and they may opt for multiple layers of coverage. Olympians might have their own insurance through a spouse, employer or the individual market. Younger athletes also might choose to be on their parents' health insurance. Since 2010, the federal health law has required insurers to cover dependents up to age 26.

According to Hutchinson, EAHI can help cover athletes above and beyond what they may have on these private insurance plans. For example, he said, the USOC likely offers better coverage of health care provided outside of the U.S.

Olympians might also look beyond EAHI because of the program's limitations. Eligibility for the health plan is determined annually, and athletes' performance or rankings can?change. EAHI also has a $25,000 deductible for sports injuries, according to recent plan information from the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. The large deductible and athletes? high risk of injury may drive them toward other insurance options.

Members of the gymnastics team often have at least two other forms of coverage, said John Hewett, chief financial officer for USA Gymnastics. Gymnasts ? usually among the youngest Olympians ? are often on their parents' health plans. They also have secondary protection through an accident insurance plan, funded by USA Gymnastics, which covers potential injuries during training and competition.

The latter ensures gymnasts have coverage for something particularly devastating, such as a paralyzing injury. According to Hutchinson, this kind of catastrophic coverage is common among sports groups that want to avoid potential lawsuits.

Hewett said that USA Gymnastics simply wants to ensure its athletes are protected before, during and after the London games.

"USOC has them for two weeks every four years," he said, "but we have to make sure they're covered the rest of the time."

Gun owners: 'We are your neighbors, co-workers, friends'

For Americans who have never owned guns, there is a deep chasm when it comes to understanding why anyone would possess them. Many gun owners, however, break down the various facets of their collections and describe rational purposes that stretch from sport to safety to a simple appreciation of vintage handcrafts.

On the occasion of Two or Three Things I Know About Provo / The Brno Edition, a small catalogue has been published, designed and edited by Experimental Jetset. The main part of the booklet consists of a short story written by Auke Boersma, a former member of the Provo movement. In this (previously unpublished) story from 1983, Boersma recalls the early days of Provo in an almost Pop Art way, comparing key members of Provo with vintage comic characters, while describing a surreal ?d?rive? through the city of Amsterdam.
Further included in the booklet is a 24-page section of photos by Johannes Schwartz, documenting the first edition of the exhibition, as took place in Amsterdam. There?s also a foreword by Experimental Jetset, as well as an afterword by Marek Pokorny, director of the Moravian Gallery.

Geographers James Cheshire and Oliver O?Brien visualized life expectancy in London as a tube map.

Whilst the average life expectancy predictions show that today?s children are expected to live longer, the range is startling. For the stations mapped, it is over 20 years with those around Star Lane (on the DLR) predicted to live, on average, for 75.3 years in contrast to 96.38 years for those around Oxford Circus. The smaller disparities are no less striking. For example, between Lancaster Gate and Mile End (20 minutes on the Central line) life expectancy decreases by 12 years and crossing the Thames between Pimlico and Vauxhall sees life expectancy drop by 6 years. The stations serving the Olympic Park fair badly and contrast with the Olympic volleyball venue at Earl?s Court whose spectators will be passing through areas with far higher life expectancies and lower child poverty

The tube map metaphor is typically a stretch, in line with the periodic table of whatever, but this actually works. [via Guardian]

Ridurre gli episodi di violenza nei reparti di Pronto Soccorso degli ospedali Inglesi migliorando l?esperienza del servizio per gli utenti.
Abstract.

With helicopter gunships, Syrian regime wins back parts of capital

Syria's rebels, meanwhile, launched an offensive to take Aleppo, a stronghold of the the Assad regime.?

Syrian rebels have launched an offensive to "liberate" the country's largest city of Aleppo, an opposition commander said Sunday, while in Damascus government troops backed by helicopter gunships wrested back control of rebel-held neighborhoods.

The opposition attack on Aleppo,?Syria's?commercial hub and traditionally a bedrock of support for President Bashar Assad, was a sign of the rebels' growing confidence and capabilities even as regime forces appeared close to regaining control of the capital Damascus after days of bloody street battles.

With?Syria's?civil war moving from the countryside and smaller cities into the country's two main urban centers, an activist group said the death toll had risen to more than 19,000 since the uprising began in March 2011. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said July is shaping up to be the deadliest month of the conflict so far, with 2,752 people killed in the first three weeks.

The bloodshed has escalated as the rebels have taken the fight to the government with a week of fighting in Damascus, including a bombing that struck at Assad's inner circle, killing four senior regime officials. In a bid to seize the momentum, the opposition also has taken control of several border crossings with Iraq and Turkey.

Most recently, a video posted online by activists Sunday showed about a dozen gunmen standing in front of the Bab al-Salamah crossing on the Turkish frontier as they raised the Syrian opposition flag.

Gains, losses for both sides

Yet, in an indication of the see-saw nature of the conflict, even as the rebels seized one crossing, they abandoned another on the Iraqi border.

Iraqi military officials and state television reported that Syrian government forces retook control of the remote Rabiya crossing between the two countries after rebels pulled out.

Gen. Qassim al-Dulaimi, commander of Iraq's forces around the border region of al-Qaim, also reported the sounds of fighting at the Bukamal crossing, suggesting Assad's troops are trying to retake that one as well.

The fighting in Damascus and Aleppo has shaken the government's once seemingly iron grip on the two cities, which are both home to elites who have benefited from close ties to Assad's regime, as well as merchant classes and minority groups who worry their status will suffer if Assad falls.

Col. Abdul-Jabbar Mohammed Aqidi, the commander of rebel forces in Aleppo province, said "we gave the orders for the march into Aleppo with the aim of liberating it."

"We urge the residents of Aleppo to stay in their homes until the city is liberated," he said in a video posted by activists on YouTube. He added that rebels were fighting inside the city while others were moving in from the outskirts.

Aqidi called on government troops to defect and join the opposition, and said rebels will protect members of President Bashar Assad's Alawite minority sect, an off-shoot of Shiite Islam, saying "our war is not with you but with the Assad family."

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed said the fighting is concentrated in several neighborhoods.

Saeed said rebels are in full control of the central Salaheddine district and the nearby Sakhour area. He added that thousands of residents have fled tense quarters of the city for safer neighborhoods and the suburbs.

"Aleppo is witnessing serious street battles" and many shops are closed, Saeed said.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones last night, each of those who were injured, the first responders and medical teams treating the victims, the law enforcement personnel and the entire community of Aurora. "All of Southern Arizona, and the nation, stands with you today."

  • Frank Lautenberg

"The shooting in Aurora is a horrific act of violence, and our thoughts go out to the innocent victims and their families," Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) said in a statement released Friday. "Our hearts are filled with sadness for the 12 people killed and the dozens wounded in this senseless act," Lautenberg said. "We have to face the reality that these types of tragedies will continue to occur unless we do something about our nation's lax gun laws."

  • Ra?l Grijalva

"My first thoughts are with the families of the people killed or injured in last night's terrible attack," Rep. Ra?l Grijalva (D-Ariz.) said in a statement Friday. "At such moments, words can offer little relief and comfort. I extend my sympathies and support to them nonetheless. There is very little most of us can do in the wake of such a tragedy, except hope the wounded recover and give the families time and space to grieve. We would be remiss if we did less. I only wish I were able to do more. "This is not the first time such a horrific crime has been visited on a peaceful community. Unfortunately, it may not be the last. When the time comes, we owe it not only to the dead and wounded but to our national community to have a conversation about violence and weapons that is respectful, honest and productive. That conversation should neither start too soon nor be postponed indefinitely. When we have it, and we will, we should be careful not to rely too much on clich?s. These attacks, like all violence, cause great pain, and that pain will not heal if we are not honest about it. "As much comfort, support and fellowship as I can offer to the people of Aurora, I humbly offer today. They have done nothing to bring this tragedy to their community. All we can do now is try to help them, and each other, bear the pain of it. Grieving is often long, but grief is not permanent. As a nation, our solemn duty is to help bring them through this period of grief and mourning without expectation, without excessive need for answers, and without judgment. If we take time, I believe we can do that much."
