Ex-surgeon general C. Everett Koop dies at 96

C. Everett Koop, who raised the profile of the surgeon general by riveting America's attention on the then-emerging disease known as AIDS and by railing against smoking, has died in New Hampshire at age 96.

An assistant at Koop's Dartmouth institute, Susan Wills, said he died Monday in Hanover, where he had a home. She didn't disclose his cause of death.

Koop wielded the previously low-profile post of surgeon general as a bully pulpit for seven years during the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

An evangelical Christian, he shocked his conservative supporters when he endorsed condoms and sex education to stop the spread of AIDS.

He carried out a crusade to end smoking in the United States ? his goal had been to do so by 2000. A former pipe smoker, he said cigarettes were as addictive as heroin and cocaine.

Koop's impact was great, although the surgeon general has no real authority to set government policy. He described himself as "the health conscience of the country."

"My only influence was through moral suasion," Koop said just before leaving office in 1989.

By then, his Amish-style silver beard and white, braided uniform were instantly recognizable.

Out of office, he switched to business suits and bow ties but continued to promote public health causes, from preventing childhood accidents to better training for doctors.

"I will use the written word, the spoken word and whatever I can in the electronic media to deliver health messages to this country as long as people will listen," he promised.

In 1996, he rapped Republican presidential hopeful Bob Dole for suggesting that tobacco is not invariably addictive, saying Dole's comments "either exposed his abysmal lack of knowledge of nicotine addiction or his blind support of the tobacco industry."

Although Koop eventually won wide respect with his blend of old-fashioned values, pragmatism and empathy, his nomination in 1981 met a wall of opposition from women's groups and liberal politicians.

Critics said Reagan selected Koop, a pediatric surgeon from Philadelphia, only because of his conservative views, especially his staunch opposition to abortion.

Foes noted that Koop traveled the country in 1979 and 1980 giving speeches that predicted a progression "from liberalized abortion to infanticide to passive euthanasia to active euthanasia, indeed to the very beginnings of the political climate that led to Auschwitz, Dachau and Belsen."

But Koop, a devout Presbyterian, was confirmed after he told a Senate panel he would not use the surgeon general's post to promote his religious ideology. He kept his word.

In 1986, he issued a frank report on AIDS, urging the use of condoms for "safe sex" and advocating sex education as early as third grade.

He also maneuvered around uncooperative Reagan administration officials in 1988 to send an educational AIDS pamphlet to more than 100 million U.S. households, the largest public health mailing ever done.

Koop personally opposed homosexuality and believed sex should be saved for marriage. But he insisted that Americans, especially young people, must not die because they were deprived of explicit information about how the HIV virus was transmitted.

He became a hero to AIDS activists, who chanted "Koop, Koop" at his appearances but booed other officials.

Koop further angered conservatives by refusing to issue a report requested by the Reagan White House, saying he could not find enough scientific evidence to determine whether abortion has harmful psychological effects on women.

Koop maintained his personal opposition to abortion, however. After he left office, he told medical students it violated their Hippocratic oath. In 2009, he wrote Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urging that health care legislation include a provision to ensure doctors and medical students would not be forced to perform abortions. The letter briefly set off a security scare because it was hand delivered.

Koop served as chairman of the National Safe Kids Campaign and as an adviser to President Bill Clinton's health care reform plan.

At a congressional hearing in 2007, Koop spoke about political pressure on the surgeon general post. He said Reagan was pressed to fire him every day, but Reagan would not interfere.

Koop, worried that medicine had lost old-fashioned caring and personal relationships between doctors and patients, opened an institute at Dartmouth to teach medical students basic values and ethics.

He also was a part-owner of a short-lived venture, drkoop.com, to provide consumer health care information via the Internet. It made its initial public offering of stock in 1999, but expenses outstripped revenue and it was out of business by the end of 2001.

In July 2001, the company agreed to pay $4.25 million in cash to settle lawsuits filed by investors who claimed drkoop.com made false promises. Company officials did not admit wrongdoing.

Koop was born in New York's borough of Brooklyn, the only son of a Manhattan banker and the nephew of a doctor. He said by age 5 he knew he wanted to be a surgeon and at age 13 he practiced his skills on neighborhood cats.

He attended Dartmouth College, where he received the nickname Chick, short for "chicken Koop." It stuck for life.

He received his medical degree at Cornell Medical College, choosing pediatric surgery because so few surgeons practiced it.

In 1938, Koop married Elizabeth Flanagan, the daughter of a Connecticut doctor. They had four children ? Allen, Norman, David and Elizabeth. David, their youngest son, was killed in a mountain-climbing accident when he was 20.

Koop was appointed surgeon-in-chief at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia and he also served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

He pioneered surgery on newborns and successfully separated three sets of conjoined twins. He won national acclaim by reconstructing the chest of a baby born with the heart outside the body.

Although raised as a Baptist, he was drawn to a Presbyterian church near the hospital, where he developed an abiding faith. He began praying at the bedside of his young patients ? ignoring the snickers of some of his colleagues.

"It used to be said in World War II that there were no atheists in foxholes," he wrote in 1973. "I have found there are very few atheists among the parents of dying children.

"This is a time when religious faith can see a family through trying circumstances."

Budget battle: 'This is not rocket science'

As the nation slowly recovers from the severe 2007-2009 recession, a battle rages between lawmakers who want the government to aggressively tackle deficits with spending cuts and those who caution the economy is still too frail to stand on its own feet.

The debate will be in the forefront when Congress returns on Monday from a nine-day recess, now facing a Friday deadline for roughly $85 billion in automatic, deficit-reduction spending cuts.

President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats suggest too much austerity now could threaten the recovery and damage the nation's social safety net. They support some spending cuts but also want higher revenues from closing tax loopholes.

Republicans, who control the House, insist on tackling deficits with spending cuts alone.

Neither side is optimistic a deal can be forged in the few remaining days. Obama's Thursday phone calls to Congress' top two Republicans ? House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell ? produced no breakthrough.

The potential shock to the economy comes at a time of sharply rising gasoline prices and a slowdown in consumer spending probably caused by the Jan. 1 increase in Social Security payroll taxes affecting nearly all workers.

Nationwide, the average price of gas was $3.78 a gallon Thursday, according to the AAA, an increase of 47 cents a gallon in just the past month. Also, Wal-Mart, the nation's leading retailer, reported it expects sales to be flat for the February-April period compared with a year ago ? suggesting a slowdown in spending among low- to middle-income consumers.

Meanwhile, the White House continued its daily recital of horror stories from the looming spending cuts.

National parks, military programs and the jobs of FBI agents, firefighters, federal prosecutors and government researchers are all on the chopping block.

On Friday, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood sounded the alarm, telling a White House briefing air traffic controllers would be among the first furloughed.

He predicted major flight delays and cancellations over "the next 30 days." A Republican, LaHood urged his former GOP House colleagues to help.

"This is not rocket science," he said.

FORT COLLINS, Colorado ? The 22nd-ranked Colorado State Rams had the 16th-ranked New Mexico Lobos and their hot-shooting guard Kendall Williams right where they wanted them.

Six minutes to go. Up six. Arena rocking.

Williams on the bench with four fouls ? and 28 points.

They were about to lock up their 28th straight home win and vault into a first-place tie with the Lobos atop the Mountain West Conference standings.

After a timeout, however, Williams returned to the Lobos' lineup and, incredibly, scored 18 more points in a 27-12 run that sent the Rams trudging off the court with their first home loss since Nov. 11, 2012.

Williams' 46 points included a league record 10 3-pointers and New Mexico's 91-82 win Saturday gave them a sweep of the season series.

The Lobos (23-4, 10-2) took a two-game lead over the second-place Rams (21-5, 8-4).

"After this one, you've got to start to taste it," Williams said. "If we handle business this week then we can really feel confident in our abilities to get this ring."

The Rams surrendered 45 points to Air Force's Michael Lyons a week earlier and their second straight loss will almost certainly send them tumbling from the rankings that they reached this month for the first time since 1954.

The Rams' 27-game winning streak was the nation's third-longest. Syracuse had the longest at 38 games, but it was snapped by Georgetown on Saturday, leaving South Dakota State's 30-game home winning streak as the best in the nation.

Nobody had ever scored this many points at Moby Arena, which opened in 1966.

"Luckily, some shots went in," said Williams, a junior guard from Rancho Cucamonga, California, who had never scored more than 24 and who bested the arena record of 44 set by Portland State's Freeman Williams on Nov. 29, 1975.

"He should be hands-down player of the week, I would think," Lobos coach Steve Alford deadpanned.

Williams helped the Lobos overcome that 70-64 deficit at the 6-minute mark by hitting a trio of 3-pointers, a dunk and seven free throws down the stretch.

Williams' offensive display overshadowed a brilliant big man competition between Lobos center Alex Kirk (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Colorado State's Colton Iverson (26 points, 15 boards).

The Rams blamed themselves for Williams' big game.

"We had no answer for him," Rams coach Larry Eustachy said. "... He was completely unstoppable. I want to see film on how many of those shots were contested."

His bet is that not many were.

The Rams, who gave up 45 points to Air Force's Michael Lyons a week earlier, left Williams open early on while locking down Tony Snell, who scored 10 points Saturday after getting 23 in their first meeting last month.

"He hadn't been shooting well this year," Dorian Green said. "We gave him some uncontested looks, let him get hot. Guys are too good in our league to do that."

"We gave him open looks early," Wes Eikmeier added. "He got hot and then he was feeling it the rest of the night."

Williams' previous career best was 24 points against Indiana State and New Mexico State earlier this season.

Green (20) and Eikmeier (22) gave the Rams three 20-point scorers in their losing effort. Eikmeier scored 11 straight to put the Rams ahead 55-50.

The Lobos quieted the crowd with a 12-6 run to regain the lead at 62-61, but Williams, less than a minute after returning to the lineup, was whistled for his fourth foul and took a seat at the nine-minute mark.

Williams' 10th 3-pointer ? in 13 tries ? broke the conference mark of nine set by several players, most recently UNLV's Chace Stanback against Central Arkansas on Dec. 28, 2011.

It also put New Mexico ahead 78-72. He would add a dunk and then seven free throws as the Rams sent the Lobos to the line over the final two minutes in a desperate attempt to catch up.

"I would say he was more determined," Eustachy said of Williams. "Their team was far more determined than us, starting from myself on down.

The Rams were coming off a two-point loss at UNLV on Wednesday night that snapped their six-game winning streak, which began after a 66-61 loss to the Lobos in Albuquerque last month.

"I believe in these guys," Eustachy said. "I can't get a crystal ball and tell you how they're going to respond, but I believe in them as much as I did going into this week. I believe they'll respond. Face it, this team was picked fifth in a lot of magazines. They caught two really difficult opponents.

"When you play these types of teams, you're going to have to play near perfect. I'm not a coach sitting here dumbfounded and not knowing what the answer it. I know exactly what the answer is. The team needs to listen and execute better."

And if they face the Lobos again in the MWC tournament next month, they'll know better than to leave Williams open.

Juliet Izon: Why I Won't Be Changing My Name on My Wedding Day

My name is Juliet Kathryn Izon. When I was born 27 years ago -- the progeny of two English majors -- I was named Juliet for its poetic Shakespearean roots, Kathryn for my mother, and inherited the Spanish-by-way-of-the-Philippines surname Izon (that's EE-zon, folks) from my father.

JKI, my initials, have been emblazoned on everything from my sturdy L.L. Bean backpack in middle school to -- my latest find! -- a retro tortoiseshell necklace I've been wearing to work almost every day. The prep-school girl within me has managed to give up my near-pathological adoration for pink and green and grosgrain belts, but I do believe the habit of initialing everything is most certainly here to stay.

And I am, I would venture to stay, more attached to my last name than most. Perhaps this comes from the decades of correcting the legions of people who insist on pronouncing it EYE-zon. The French, unsurprisingly, seem to be the only ones that get it right at first glance, which only strengthens my belief that I am a true Frenchwoman manqu?. Regardless, I have had to spell ("Yes, that's "Z" as in "Zebra...") and annoyingly correct the pronunciation of my last name since I first learned how to speak. For the record, that was incredibly early. I was a gifted child.

And so, since there are no boys in my family, the name Izon more or less ends with my sister and me (we'll save the conversation about my future children's surname for another post, shall we?). I never gave this much import until recently, when I became engaged and everyone started asking me what I planned to do about changing my name. "Well," I managed to stammer, "I really like my last name? It has a Z in it!" This was met with mostly confused stares and an awkward leap to another topic of conversation.

But hey, it's the truth! I like my last name. I like that nearly everyone I meet with it is most likely related to me. I like that, as far as I know, I am the only Juliet Izon in the world who you can Google. And speaking of search engine accessibility, I have, so to speak, made a name for myself ... with my name. A quick Google search reveals some of my proudest moments professionally: my very first Huffington Post article, my numerous TV and radio appearances, and, if you dig a little deeper, that amazing canon of work from my early years as an editor at the Trinity College Tripod. This is what Juliet Izon has done so far and, I hope, only a small percentage of what I will continue to do.

So, what, I'm just supposed to give it up? Part with my super sweet "Z?" Swap my place in the alphabet for -- gasp -- another letter? I'm not even going to broach the topic of the changing my Gmail address. I break out in a cold sweat just contemplating such a Herculean task.

All of this for matrimonial unity, huh? Now, don't get me wrong, I love my future husband's last name. Many people even call him by it. It's the same number of syllables as my own and even ends in the same letter, so the conversion wouldn't be terribly painful. But it's still not my name. And that, my friends, is the distilled essence of my predicament.

If I took my fianc?'s surname, a part of me feels like I'd be erasing everything that I've accomplished under my maiden name. It may be an entirely nonsensical sentiment, but it's one that sticks with me nonetheless. I don't want to have to give up a huge part of my identity just because I'm getting married. Standing together on our wedding day, I'm thrilled to be marrying someone that I am crazily, stupidly and entirely in love with. But, at least for me, marriage doesn't mean you suddenly meld into one being; it's rather two people who form a union that makes each individual that much more awesome.

I will be my husband's wife and wear that moniker with enormous pride, the same way I hope he's counting down the days until he can call himself Juliet's husband. But as for the rest of you? You can address me as Ms. Izon. Or "your highness," I suppose that's acceptable too.

Investing in MLPs: Three Set to Soar on Shale Expansion - Money ...

  • By Don Miller, Contributing Writer, Money Morning
  • February 21, 2013
  • Text size

If you're one of the millions of investors trying to find decent yielding income investments, there's one place you should be looking -- Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs).

That's because if you play your cards right you can pocket a cool 6% to 10% or more from investing in MLPs - while the yield on the broad market barely cracks 2%.

As an added bonus, 80% to 90% of distributions from MLPs are tax-free until you sell.

As America's newfound shale formations spew forth million of barrels of oil and gas an infrastructure boom will be needed to store and ship it.

And a few select MLPs will be primed to cash in.

From the Well to the Pump: Investing in Midstream MLPs

Back in 1986, Congress passed a sweeping tax act to speed up the development of domestic energy resources.

The new law created tax-free partnerships to promote investment in "midstream" energy assets--the companies that connect producing fields (upstream) with refineries and retail sales (downstream).

These midstream MLPs profit from the flow of energy, transporting it from place to place with large pipelines and/or storing it in terminals.

Thing is, it doesn't matter whether the price of oil and gas goes up or down -- midstreams get a steady stream of profits either way.

"When you invest in the midstream, you're far less susceptible to price fluctuations in the underlying commodity, and you are able to collect easy profits from the growing demand in fuels," explains Money Morning Global Energy Strategist Dr. Kent Moors, who holds many MLPs in his Energy Advantage investment service.

Over the past 10 years, $1,000 invested in the Alerian MLP Index would have grown to nearly $4,500 today with distributions reinvested-an annualized return of 16%.

Meanwhile, a $1,000 investment in the S&P 500 Index with dividends reinvested would have grown to a little more than $2,000 - a return of 7%, not counting taxes that would have been owed.

And now the shale revolution transforming the North American natural gas and oil markets is giving MLPs a wave of new opportunities that should allow them to expand distributions to investors.

You see, the glut of natural gas and oil from vast shale plays like the Bakken and Eagle Ford will require significant investment in infrastructure to transport, refine and distribute what's being extracted from the ground.

In fact, the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America estimates investment in infrastructure in natural gas and oil pipelines will grow by $251 billion over the next 25 years in the U.S. and Canada.

The completion of major pipeline projects to move and store the glut of crude oil and natural gas will be a turning point for the North American energy industry.

Here are three midstream companies with juicy yields that will be on the leading edge of the boom.

    What's a Tablet PC?

Tablet PCs are compact, ultra-portable entertainment devices that let you read email, surf the internet, read eBooks, view photos, play games, listen to music and watch video files. Most tablets are based on a smaller operating system, which allows you to purchase and download additional applications from supported stores. Tablet PCs do not have a CD/DVD drive and will not run Microsoft Windows or its applications. Tablet PCs function as a secondary device for casual entertainment purposes, and are not meant to replace a computer. They are ideal for use around the home and on the go with Wi-Fi or 3-4g mobile broadband connections (pay as you go, contract may be required for service).

Sony America head 'hopes' PlayStation 4 won't cost $599 at launch, says specs aren't finalized yet

Despite showing a variety of games running on the newly announced PlayStation 4, Sony PlayStation's US head Jack Tretton says the console's "still in development in terms of final specs and design." He told All Things D as much in an interview this morning; the PlayStation 4's specs were detailed in a press release by Sony last evening, which detail the internals as an 8-core 64-bit x86 "Jaguar" CPU built by AMD, a Radeon GPU comprised of 18 "compute units" which push out 1.84 TFLOPS, and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM.

Tretton also said he "hopes" that the PlayStation 4 won't cost $599 at launch (the PlayStation 3 launched in two models, at $499 and $599). "When I think about the console, you open it up, you look at it, you certainly look at it when you insert a disc, but for most people, it's behind a cabinet or on a shelf somewhere and you spend all your time looking at the screen," Tretton said.

Sony's focus last night, however, was all games. As for when we'll see the elusive box? "There will be multiple opportunities to share the look of the console between now and launch," he said, "We just didn't choose this first event as the time to show it." In speaking with Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida this morning, we confirmed that we'll get to go hands-on with the PlayStation 4 "by E3," which goes from June 11th to the 13th.

Eight Productivity Tools for Getting Things Done ? Business coach ...

Welcome to the whiteboard for Session #33 of Making Business Happen Radio, the show to help you build your business playbook. This is the podcast to help you become more profitable, productive, and prepared to grow your business. I?m Dallon Christensen, your host and the founder of Whiteboard Business Partners.

This podcast is brought to you by Kent Julian?s Speak it Forward Boot Camp from May 2-4 in the Atlanta, Georgia area. I have attended this event in the past, and it is the best conference I?ve attended to help you build a speaking business. Much of what you find on my own speaking page is what I?ve learned with Kent?s guidance. Sign up using the promotional code ?whiteboard? to receive a special registration bonus for participating.

I have discussed how you must build your own workflow ideas without the help of technology. However, technology can be a tremendous way to improve your productivity. Smartphones and tablets, when used correctly, can give you the ability to stay productive and organized anywhere. These eight tools are productivity applications I?ve tested for at least one project to help me become more organized.

Asana ? The Simplified GTD Experience

    • Free for up to 30 users
    • I have used this for shared projects and grocery lists
    • iPhone app is very easy to use
    • Tags give GTD functionality
    • Allows sharing and comments among team members and outside people

    Evernote?- The All-in-One

    • Cross-platform is the biggest benefit
    • Not designed as a GTD tool, more of a reference tool
    • Very flexible ? can arrange the system as you like
    • Evernote?s key functionalities
      • Scanned paper
      • Forwarded e-mails
      • Tagging
      • Notebooks ? I share a notebook with my coach, for example
    • $45/year or $5/month for premium version. Free version available

    IQTell- The Collector

    • Currently in private beta ? sign up here
    • I have tested the beta and found several great features
      • Single point of access for many productivity items
        • Calendar
        • E-mail
        • Tickler items
        • Reference items
      • Can link many tools into IQTell
    • Can also link multiple e-mail accounts
    • Ability to create action steps and projects from a reference item or e-mail is a good touch
    • Great for people who want a single point of contact for their productivity system
    • Sahaf Flam, IQTell?s co-founder, is a future guest on Making Business Happen Radio.

    OmniFocus?- The GTD Powerhouse

    • Closest thing to a GTD-approved app ? GTD/Omnifocus manual
    • Follows the GTD workflow very closely
    • Many features
      • Subtasks
      • Different perspectives
    • Most expensive option

    ?

    • $11.99 on Mac App Store, $4.99 for universal iOS version
    • Three structures
    • Use tags for any identification desired
      • @today ? What you want to complete today
      • @next ? What you want to do next for each project
      • Could also tag with context or people names
    • Clean, simple structure

    Things?- The Mac Experience

    • Must pay for all three versions
    • Most visually appealing of the ?traditional? task apps
    • No contexts like OmniFocus
    • Can use tags for contexts, people, etc.
    • Good mix of GTD methodology and flexibility

    Trello?- The Visual Experience

    • Currently free
    • Corkboard concept ? Like adding cards to a series of boards
    • Can set up boards by project, client, or other setup
    • Ability to share with co-workers and outside users

      • Green ? Next actions
    • My wife and I use this for many home checklists and tasks
      • Grocery lists
      • Nightly cleaning duties

    Zendone?- Evernote integration

    • Free beta testing as of February 2013
    • Intergrates with Google Apps and Evernote

The Lede: Spectacular Videos of Meteor Over Siberia

Video posted on YouTube on Friday appeared to catch an explosion caused by a meteor streaking over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk.

Last Updated, 5:40 p.m. As our colleagues Ellen Barry and Andrew Kramer report, Russians recorded video of bright objects, apparently debris from a meteor, ?streaking through the sky in western Siberia early on Friday, accompanied by a boom that damaged buildings across a vast area of territory.? Hundreds of injuries were reported, mainly from breaking glass.

The video clips, many recorded from cars on the dashboard cameras that are popular in Russia, quickly spread from social networks to Russian news sites. While it was not possible to confirm the authenticity of all of the clips posted online, several tracked closely with witness accounts and each other. (Russian speakers should be aware that many of the videos contain strong language.)

Video recorded from the dashboard camera of a car in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on Friday.

Video said to have been recorded on Friday in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk as a meteor passed low overhead. An explosion can be heard clearly at the seven-minute mark of the video.

Dashboard-camera footage appeared to record a meteor plunging to Earth on Friday in Russia.

Video uploaded to YouTube on Friday was said to have been recorded over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk (although the camera?s time stamp displays an earlier date).

NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported, ?The Russian fireball is the largest reported since 1908, when a fireball hit Tunguska, Siberia.?

The fireball entered the atmosphere at about 40,000 mph (18 kilometers per second). The impact time was 7:20:26 p.m. PST, or 10:20:26 p.m. EST on Feb. 14 (3:20:26 UTC on Feb. 15), and the energy released by the impact was in the hundreds of kilotons.

Based on the duration of the event, it was a very shallow entry. It was larger than the fireball over Indonesia on Oct. 8, 2009. Measurements are still coming in, and a more precise measure of the energy may be available later. The size of the object before hitting the atmosphere was about 49 feet (15 meters) and had a mass of about 7,000 tons.

Later in the day, NASA released more information about the meteor.

Our colleague Henry Fountain reminds us of the vastly greater impact of what?s known as The Tunguska Event on 1908.

Several clips showed a flaming object streaking through the sky and a burst of blinding light followed by a smoke trail. One, shot by a driver named Alexander Mezentsev, showed a bright light over a city street in Chelyabinsk, a city of 1 million about 900 miles east of Moscow.

One clip, recorded on a street in Chelyabinsk, appeared to capture the chaotic aftermath of the event, as glass shattered after the shock wave and people shouted and tried to make sense of what was happening.

Video said to have been recorded in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on Friday after a meteor passed overhead.

A very loud explosion could be heard about 25 seconds into another video, apparently recorded on a phone in the same city by a blogger named Sergey Hametov.

Video said to have been recorded on Friday in Chelyabinsk appeared to capture a loud explosion.

?There was panic. People had no idea what was happening,? Mr. Hametov told The Associated Press. ?We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud, thundering sound.?

The blast, and breaking glass, was also captured about 70 seconds into another clip, which showed very clear images of the smoke trail after the meteor passed by.

Video posted on YouTube on Friday showed a smoke trail and a loud explosion after a meteor passed over Siberia.

Another video, shot from the window of a building, seemed to capture the long trail of smoke after the object passed through the sky.

Video posted on YouTube Friday appeared to show the trail of a meteor fragment in the sky.

Several clips also showed what bloggers said was the damage caused by the sonic boom.

Our colleague William Broad from The Times Science desk will be explaining what likely caused today?s spectacular event and answering questions on The Lede later today.

Almost immediately after the spectacular images appeared online, Russian bloggers started making comic alterations, adding aliens and President Vladimir V. Putin to the pictures.

Some of the numerous videos that quickly emerged of the incident highlighted a distinctly Russian phenomenon: the viral dashboard-cam clip. As the blogger Marina Galperina explained last year, they are commonplace in Russia partly because of the dangerous driving conditions that lead to so many accidents, and with an unreliable police force such cameras can provide valuable evidence after a crash.

The conditions of Russian roads are perilous, with insane gridlock in cities and gigantic ditches, endless swamps and severe wintry emptiness on the back roads and highways. Then there are large, lawless areas you don?t just ride into, the police with a penchant for extortion and deeply frustrated drivers who want to smash your face.

Psychopaths are abundant on Russian roads. You best not cut anyone off or undertake some other type of maneuver that might inconvenience the 200-pound, six-foot-five brawling children you see on YouTube hopping out of their SUVs with their dukes up. They will go ballistic in a snap, drive in front of you, brake suddenly, block you off, jump out and run towards your vehicle. Next thing you start getting punches in your face because your didn?t roll up your windows, or getting pulled out of the car and beaten because you didn?t lock the doors.

These fights happen all the time and you can?t really press charges. Point to your broken nose or smashed windows all you want. The Russian courts don?t like verbal claims. They do, however, like to send people to jail for battery and property destruction if there?s definite video proof.

One popular video posted on YouTube last year appeared to show just such a fight being prevented by a man facing down another driver clutching a baseball bat by pointing out that any attack on him would be recorded on his dashboard-cam.

Just last month, video recorded by a Russian driver on a dashboard-cam showed a tank suddenly cutting across a highway.

The meteor that streaked across the Russian skies came from almost the opposite direction as 2012 DA14, the larger asteroid that missed Earth on Friday. That both showed up on the same day was just cosmic coincidence.

?There is no relation there,? said Paul Chodas, a scientist at NASA?s Near-Earth Object program office.
