CSN: 'Wild Thing' says Manny could be a Phillie

Manny Ramirez believes he's ready to return to the majors.

Thanks to the A's, who couldn't guarantee a promotion to the majors and on Friday granted his request for a release, the 40-year-old Ramirez is now a free agent.

Could the 12-time All-Star end up with the Phillies? Former Phils closer and CSN Postgame Live analyst Mitch Williams thinks so. Now an analyst for MLB Network, Williams on Friday night's edition of MLB Tonight explained why.

"If he's healthy, don't be shocked if he ends up in Philadelphia, because Charlie Manuel and him are very, very close," Williams said. "And they need a bat bad in Philly. If nothing else, Manny changes the way pitchers pitch."

Ramirez and Manuel spent seven seasons together with the Cleveland Indians. Manuel was the Indians' hitting coach for the first six (1994-99) and the manager for the seventh (2000).

Ramirez signed a minor league deal with Oakland on Feb. 20 and hit .302 with 14 RBIs in 17 games for Triple-A Sacramento after serving a 50-game suspension for violating the MLB drug policy last year.

After signing a one-year, $2.02 million deal with Tampa Bay last year, Ramirez went 1 for 17 in five games. He retired instead of serving a 100-game suspension for a second failed drug test (he also failed one in 2009 while with the Dodgers). Commissioner Bud Selig cut the suspension in half after Ramirez sat out the rest of the season.

Treating Low Grade DCIS - Dr. Jay K. Harness - Breast Cancer ...

In this video, Dr. Jay K. Harness describes the typical treatment strategy for low-grade ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS.

Breast Cancer Answers Ask A Question

Breast Cancer Answers PDF

Jay K. Harness, MD:?Low grade DCIS.? I had a question about the treatment of low grade DCIS.? Another videos that I have done here at Breast Cancer Answers, I really emphasized high grade DCIS, and particularly my concerns about high grade DCIS, as far as the propensity or the odds of high grade will recur locally and other related factors.

So we have had a question about low grade DCIS.? Now, I want to remind everybody that fundamentally there are three grades of in situ breast cancer just like there are three grades of invasive breast cancers, low, intermediate and high or, when we talk about invasive cancers we talk about well-differentiated, moderately or poorly differentiated.

Well, let?s stick to DCIS, Ductal Carcinoma In Situ, and let?s talk about low grade DCIS.? Well, a lot of debate actually about lower grade DCIS.? There are certainly those who feel that low grade DCIS can probably be treated with may be a simple lumpectomy.

There is another camp of people who feel that low grade DCIS may not require any treatment at all.? In other words is low grade DCIS similar to some of the low grade tumors that we see in the prostates of men who over years and years and years do absolutely nothing.

Well, I think to ultimately answer this question what we have got to have is much more in the way of molecular information about these various grades of in situ breast cancer, and to then know what the natural history of that molecular information would be.

Now, one of the advantages of the Oncotype DX test for DCIS is that at least for beginning that process of starting to look at the molecular profile, if you will, of in situ breast cancer to help us project whether a patient needs radiation therapy or not, and I would refer you to one of the prior videos that we have done on this here at breast cancer answers.

So what?s the standard treatment of low grade in situ breast cancer right now will certainly, I think, depending on the age of the patient and many other factors, taking that area out and having negative margins that I have talked about, larger rim of normal tissue all the way around.

Frankly, depending on other factors that a local multi-disciplinary team can help you with, that may be all the treatment you need and then close follow-up.? I certainly have many patients with low grades, small areas of DCIS, that?s the case for.

Now, you can also have low grade DCIS that may involve a very large area of the breast, and in getting all that out might lead to a significant cosmetic deformity of the breast and frankly, if you are in that situation, believe it or not may be mastectomy is the way to go.

So, I can generalize, for obviously every case because the size of the in situ matters, the location of the in situ matters, the size of the breast matters, as far as the surgical approach and then the issue of radiation therapy, again size can matter, but I will also refer you to the video here at Breast Cancer Answers about using Oncotype DX with DCIS.

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has accused Russia of sending attack helicopters to Syria. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejects the claim, saying that Russia is only shipping air defense systems under previously signed contracts.

Russia has shipped billions of dollars worth of missiles, combat jets, tanks, artillery and other military gear to Syria over more than four decades. Here is a brief look at some weapons systems Russia has recently shipped to Syria or pledged to deliver, according to official statements and Russian media reports:

COMBAT HELICOPTERS

Russia has denied the claim it is sending helicopters to Syria, but some Russian military analysts said the helicopters mentioned by Clinton could be some of the older Soviet-supplied ones that are being sent back to Syria after maintenance in Russia.

Syria has received dozens of Soviet-built Mi-8 and Mi-17 transport helicopters and Mi-24 helicopter gunships since the Cold War with the last deliveries taking place in the 1990s. Some of them require major repairs that can only be done by Russian repair plants.

PANTSYR-S1 AIR DEFENSE SYSTEM:

The truck-mounted short- and medium-range system combines air defense missiles and anti-aircraft artillery with sophisticated radar to hit aerial targets with deadly precision at ranges of up to 20 kilometers (more than 12 miles) and an altitude of 15 kilometers (nearly 50,000 feet). It has further strengthened Syria's air defense system, which has been developed with Moscow's help since Cold War times.

Igor Sevastyanov, a deputy head of the Rosoboronexport state arms trader, said Wednesday that the Pantsyr contract is still being implemented. Sevastyanov didn't offer specifics, but Russian media reports have said that the contract envisioned the delivery of 36 such truck-mounted units which combine guns and missiles together with a radar.

BUK-M2 AIR DEFENSE SYSTEM

The medium-range missile system is capable of hitting enemy aircraft and cruise missiles at ranges of up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) and an altitude of up to 25 kilometers (82,000 feet). It is a sophisticated weapon that is capable of inflicting heavy losses to enemy aircraft if Syria comes under attack.

BASTION ANTI-SHIP MISSILE SYSTEM

Armed with supersonic Yakhont cruise missiles that have a range of up to 300 kilometers (162 nautical miles), it provides a strong deterrent against an attack from the sea. Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said last fall that Moscow would fully honor the Bastion contract. Russian media reports said that Russia already has fulfilled the Bastion deal, which was worth $300 million, and included the delivery of more than 70 Yakhont missiles.

YAK-130 COMBAT JETS

Russian media reports said early this year that Syria had ordered a batch of 36 Yak-130 combat jets worth $550 million. Officials wouldn't confirm or deny the deal, which would significantly bolster the Syrian air force capability. The Yak-130 is a combat training jet that can also carry modern weapons for ground attack missions. Analysts say early deliveries are unlikely as the aircraft's pace of production is very slow.

RUSSIA'S STANCE

The Kremlin has insisted that the continuing Russian arms sales don't violate any international agreements and scoffed at Western demands to halt the trade. Underlining Moscow's defiance, a Russian ship carrying a load of weapons arrived In Syria just a few weeks ago amid international anger over Assad's refusal to honor a U.N.-sponsored peace plan.

The new Russian weapons supplies add to Syria's massive arsenal of hundreds of Soviet-built combat jets, attack helicopters and missiles and thousands of tanks, other armored vehicles and artillery systems. Russia said it also has military advisers in Syria training the Syrians to use the Russian weapons, and has helped repair and maintain Syrian weapons.

African Americans Prostate Cancer | Breaking News for Black America

african americans prostate cancer A recent study suggests that African-American couples affected by the trials of prostate cancer face emotional challenges that increase the burden of combating the disease. Researchers at the Moffitt Cancer Center of Florida published the study in the Journal of Cancer Education, which focused primarily on African-American men and how their families fared while dealing with cancer.

?African-Americans continue to experience higher morbidity and mortality rates from prostate cancer and lower survival rates when compared to men of other ethnic and racial groups,? said study leader Brian M. Rivers, Ph.D., M.P.H. Rivers and his research team uncovered several key factors that may contribute to lower prostate cancer survivor rates amongst Black families. Tumor biology, lack of insurance coverage, lack of prostate cancer knowledge, and inadequate communication between the patient?s family and doctors are just a few items said to have detrimental impact.

?Prostate cancer treatment not only impacts the survivor, but also the primary caregiver and family members,? Rivers added. ?Our aim was to examine the role of sociocultural factors on the psychosocial impact among African-American prostate cancer survivors. Little has been documented on how African-American prostate cancer survivors respond and cope with physical and psychosocial outcomes.?

The Moffitt Cancer Center study used twelve couples who were recruited as part of a cancer registry maintained by the National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. The couples were interviewed with a focus on how the disease had become burdensome in their lives. Researchers found, for example, that prostate cancer patients? chances of survival vary depending on their social networks.

?Several findings from this study point to the need for culturally appropriate interventions that include the role and impact of spirituality, better information for couples regarding symptoms and symptom management, and more effective communication paths,? researchers said.
